Mother Tongue Studies

UIS provides facilities and supplies for classes wherein expatriate SIL children are instructed in their family’s mother tongue (the language used in the home).  Teachers for these classes, as well as curriculum, are determined by each distinct language community in Ukarumpa.  The goal of these classes is to help the students maintain their mother tongue proficiency, as well as adequate function in mother tongue academics, so they are prepared to re-enter the education system when they return to their passport country.

MTS classes assume pre-existing mother-tongue fluency and are not intended to be foreign-language classes.

“Without UIS, our ability to invest in our ministries would be limited or even impossible and daily life would be far more challenging.  In fact, without UIS, we may not have even been able to come to Papua New Guinea to begin serving its people. UIS has been a blessing for our family.”
